Faith is the substance

Alive in Christ
Col 2:6  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Col 2:7  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Col 2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ
Col 2:9  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily
Col 2:10  And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
Col 2:11  In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
Col 2:12  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Col 2:13  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
Col 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Col 2:15  And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
Isa 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Isa 9:7  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
Spiritual Blessings in Christ
Eph 1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Eph 1:4  According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5  Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:6  To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
Eph 1:7  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace
Eph 1:8  Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
Eph 1:9  Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself
Eph 1:10  That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Eph 1:11  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will
Eph 1:12  That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
Eph 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Rom 10:14  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
(Eph 1:14)  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
 (E. W. Bullinger)  Ephesians 1:14
Which . . . possession. In parenthesis.
the earnest = a pledge. See 2Co_1:22. The gift of the new nature (spirit) is a pledge of God’s future gifts in the same kind, thus differing from any ordinary pledge. Compare 1Pe_1:4.
inheritance. Greek. kleronomia. See Act_20:32. Compare our inheritance here, and His inheritance, Eph_1:18.
until = unto. Greek. eis. App-104.
purchased possession. Greek. peripoiesis. Here; 1Th_5:9. 2Th_2:14. Heb_10:39. 1Pe_2:9. Compare Act_20:28.
 (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown)  Ephesians 1:14
earnest — the first installment paid as a pledge that the rest will follow (Rom_8:23; 2Co_1:22).
until — rather, “Unto the redemption,” etc.; joined thus, “ye were sealed (Eph_1:13) unto,” that is, for the purpose of and against, the accomplishment of “the redemption,” namely, not the redemption in its first stage, made by the blood of Christ, which secures our title, but, in its final completion, when the actual possession shall be ours, the full “redemption of the body” (Rom_8:23), as well as of the soul, from every infirmity (Eph_4:30). The deliverance of the creature (the body, and the whole visible creation) from the bondage of corruption, and from the usurping prince of this world, into the glorious liberty of the children of God (Rom_8:21-23; 2Pe_3:13).
of the purchased possession — God’s people purchased (“acquired,” Greek) as His peculiar (Greek) possession by the blood of Christ (Act_20:28). We value highly that which we pay a high price for; so God, His Church (Eph_5:25, Eph_5:26; 1Pe_1:18; 1Pe_2:9; “my special treasure,Mal_3:17, Margin).
 (John Gill)  Ephesians 1:14
Which is the earnest of our inheritance,.... The incorruptible and never fading one in heaven, or the heavenly kingdom; this is the Father's gift, his bequest, and belongs only to children; it comes to them through the death of the testator, Christ, and is for ever; and of this the Spirit of God is the pledge and earnest: an earnest, is what confirms an agreement, and assures the right to the thing agreed to, and is a part of it, and lesser than it, and is never returned; so the Spirit of God certifies the right to the heavenly inheritance, as well as gives a meetness for it; he is the firstfruits of eternal glory and happiness, and of the same kind with it; and as he is enjoyed in measure by the saints now, is lesser than the communion which they shall have with him, and with the Father, and the Son, hereafter, for the best things are reserved till last; and being once given into the heart as an earnest, he always continues, he never removes more, or is ever taken away:
until the redemption of the purchased possession, or "of the peculiar people"; see 1Pe_2:9, for this is not to be understood of heaven, which is never said to be purchased, nor can it with any propriety be said to be redeemed; but of saints, of the church of God, who are bought with a price, and are purchased with his blood; and who, as they were redeemed from sin, Satan, and the law, when they were purchased, so will be redeemed again in the resurrection morn, which is called the day of redemption, Eph_4:30, and which will be a redemption of them from the weakness, corruption, and mortality of the body; from their present state of absence and pilgrimage; from the body of sin and death; from all sorrows and afflictions, both inward and outward; from the reproaches and persecutions of men; from a tempting devil, and an unbelieving heart; from all doubts and fears; and from death and the grave; and so the Syriac version very justly renders it, "until the redemption of them that are saved". Now till such time, the Spirit of God abides as an earnest, even until the whole felicity is enjoyed both in soul and body; and this shows the perpetuity of the Spirit's inhabitation, and grace, the final perseverance of the saints, and the security of the inheritance to them.
Unto the praise of his glory; as to the glory of the Father, by whom the saints are chosen and predestinated, Eph_1:6 and to the glory of the Son, by whom they are redeemed, in whom they obtain the inheritance, and in whom they trust, Eph_1:12, so to the glory of the Holy Spirit, by whom they are sealed, and who is their earnest; for he must have his share of glory in the salvation of the elect, as well as the other two persons.
 (Wuest's Word Studies)  Ephesians 1:14
The Holy Spirit is described as "the earnest of our inheritance." The word "earnest" is arrabōn. Vincent defines it as "caution-money deposited by a purchaser in pledge of full payment." The papyri give us the following examples: "a woman who was selling a cow received 1000 drachmae as earnest money; regarding Lampon the mouse-catcher, I paid him for you as earnest money 8 drachmae in order that he may catch the mice while they are with young" (M. and M.). They say: "The above vernacular usage amply confirms the N.T., sense of an ’earnest’ or a part given in advance of what will be bestowed fully afterwards." The bestowal of the Holy Spirit is God’s part payment in the salvation He gives the believing sinner, that part payment guaranteeing the full delivery of all parts of the salvation given. Salvation is in three parts; justification, the removal of the guilt and penalty of sin and the bestowal of a positive righteousness, Jesus Christ, is given at the moment the sinner puts his faith in the Lord Jesus as Saviour; sanctification, a progressive work of the Spirit in the life of the believer, is a present possession in which He eliminates sin from the experience of the believer and produces His own fruit; glorification, the act of God transforming the present bodies of believers into perfect, sinless, deathless bodies. The believer has the first two now. The Holy Spirit, indwelling the believer, is God’s earnest money, guaranteeing to him the future glorification of his body.
The Holy Spirit is this guarantee until "the redemption of the purchased possession." The words "purchased possession" are peripoiēsis, which "expresses the general idea of preserving, acquiring, gaining for one’s self, without specific reference to a price" (Expositors). It refers to the saints as God’s heritage which He preserves for Himself. The final redemption of this possession is glorification, when the physical body will be the recipient of the work of salvation. The soul and spirit are now the recipients of God’s saving grace. The body will experience that work at the Rapture when the first resurrection takes place. This will result to the praise of God’s glory.

Translation (Eph_1:3-14). May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be eulogized, the One who conferred benefactions upon us in the sphere of every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, (4) even as He selected us out for Himself in Him before the foundations of the universe were laid, to be holy ones and without blemish before His searching, penetrating gaze; (5) in love having previously marked us out with the result that He placed us as adult sons through the intermediate agency of Jesus Christ for Himself according to that which seemed good in His heart’s desire, (6) resulting in praise of the glory of His grace which He freely bestowed upon us in the Beloved, (7) in whom we are having our redemption through His blood, the putting away of our trespasses according to the wealth of His grace (8) which He caused to superabound to us in the sphere of every wisdom and understanding, (9) having made known to us the mystery of His will according to that which seemed good to Him, which good thing He purposed in Himself, (10) with respect to an administration of the completion of the seasons, to bring back again to their original state the all things in the Christ, the things in the heavens and the things on the. earth, in Him, (11) in whom also we were made an inheritance, having been previously marked out according to the purpose of the One who operates the all things according to the counsel of His will, (12) resulting in our being to the praise of His glory who had previously placed our hope in the Christ, (13) in whom also, as for you, having heard the word of the truth, the good news of your salvation, in whom also having believed, you were sealed with the Spirit of the promise, the Holy (Spirit), (14) who is the earnest of our inheritance guaranteeing the full payment of all to the redemption of the possession which is being preserved, with a view to the praise of His glory.

Rom 11:13  For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office:

Rom 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

1Co 15:1  Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1Co 15:2  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
1Co 15:3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1Co 15:4  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Gal 1:6  I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Gal 1:7  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. Salvation is a free gift and has no requirements for quallifieng for it other than BELIEVING The finished work of Christ, death, burial, and resurrection. Anything added to orrequires something other than JUST BELIEVING is a pervision of The Gospel of Grace preached by PAUL.
Gal 1:8  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:10  For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Eph 1:14  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession [The obtaining of our Glorified Body from Christ Jesus when He retrieves us from this earth], unto the praise of his glory. Sealed and preserved forever in Christ Jesus became part of His Body.

Eph 1:11  In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Rom 8:14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Rom 8:15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Rom 8:16  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Rom 8:17  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

(2Ti 2:7)  Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.
 (Vincent's Word Studies)  2 Timothy 2:7
Consider (νόει)
Better, understand.
And the Lord give thee understanding (δώσει γάρ ὁ κύριος σύνεσιν)
More correctly, for the Lord shall give. For σύνεσιν understanding, see on Mar_12:33; see on Luk_2:47; see on Col_1:9.
 (Robertson's Word Pictures)  2 Timothy 2:7
Consider (noei). Present active imperative of noeō, old verb, to put your mind (nous) on. See Eph_3:4 and like command in 1Co_10:15.
Understanding (sunesin). “Comprehension” (from suniēmi, to send together, to grasp). See note on Col_1:9; note on Col_2:2. This is a blessed promise that calls for application.
 (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown)  2 Timothy 2:7
Consider the force of the illustrations I have given from the soldier, the contender in the games, and the husbandmen, as applying to thyself in thy ministry.
and the Lord give, etc. — The oldest manuscripts read, “for the Lord will give thee understanding.” Thou canst understand my meaning so as personally to apply it to thyself; for the Lord will give thee understanding when thou seekest it from Him “in all things.” Not intellectual perception, but personal appropriation of the truths metaphorically expressed, was what he needed to be given him by the Lord.

and the Lord give thee understanding in all things; in all the above things, and in all others; in all the doctrines and mysteries of grace, and in all the rules of conduct in life. No man has of himself an understanding in spiritual things; this is the gift of God; and where it is given there is need of an increase of it, and always of such a prayer for it. The Alexandrian copy, Vulgate Latin, and Arabic versions, read, "the Lord will give thee", &c, and so the words are a promise, an encouragement to Timothy, to consider well of these things; for he might assure himself, that, in so doing, God would give him more understanding in them.
 (Wuest's Word Studies)  2 Timothy 2:7
"Consider" is noeō, "to perceive with the mind, to understand, think upon, ponder, consider." Expositors translates, " ’Grasp the meaning’ of these three similes. . . . If you have not sufficient wisdom to follow my argument, ’ask of God who giveth to all men liberally’ (Jas_1:15)." Paul had used the illustration of a soldier. Timothy was to live a rugged, strenuous Christian life in which hardships as the result of serving the Lord Jesus were an expected thing. He used the simile of a Greek athlete. Timothy should live a life of rigid separation, not merely with respect to evil things, but also with regard to things which, good in themselves, would unfit him for the highest type of Christian service. Paul now uses the metaphor of a tiller of the soil. Timothy is reminded that the Christian worker who labors with wearisome effort in the Lord’s service, has the right to derive his financial support from it, so that he might be able to give all of his time and strength to his work.
Translation: Grasp the meaning of that which I am saying, for the Lord will give you understanding in all things.

sealed
The Holy Spirit is Himself the seal. In the symbolism of Scripture a seal signifies:
(1) A finished transaction Jer_32:9; Jer_32:10; Joh_17:4; Joh_19:30.
(2) Ownership Jer_32:11; Jer_32:12; 2Ti_2:19
(3) Security Est_8:8; Dan_6:17; Eph_4:30
In Whom, &c. The Ellipsis (App-6) should be supplied from the subject of Eph_1:11. In (Greek. en) Whom ye were made an inheritance also; or, allotted as God’s own inheritance.
after, &c. = having heard. See Eph_1:5.
word of truth. The Word always the instrument of the new begetting. Compare Joh_17:17. Jam_1:18. 1Pe_1:23.
sealed. Compare Eph_4:30. Mat_27:66. Joh_3:33. 2Co_1:22. Rev_7:3; &c. A seal affixed implies possession, or security, as well as being a distinctive mark.
holy Spirit. Although both articles occur (see App-101.), yet it is clear from the "earnest, a pledge" (Eph_1:14) that it is the gift, not the Giver.
promise = the promise. See Joh_16:13, and compare Act_1:4, which latter refers to the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise in Joh_16:13.
Rom 8:7  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom_13:10  Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law
Gal_5:6  For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Gal_5:13  For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
Gal_5:14  For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Gal_5:22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, [complete in Christ Jesus. Made perfect, mature]
(Eph 1:13)  In whom [The Christ] ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye [That very instant you] believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
2Co_1:21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
2Co 1:22  Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Gal 3:2  This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Heb 11:1  Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Rom 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the (THE TRUTH OF PAUL’S GOSPEL) word of God.
 (Jamieson-Fausset-Brown)  Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also — Ye Gentiles. Supply as English Version, “trusted,” from Eph_1:12; or “are.” The priority of us Jews does not exclude you Gentiles from sharing in Christ (compare Act_13:46).
the word of truth — the instrument of sanctification, and of the new birth (Joh_17:17; 2Ti_2:15; Jas_1:18). Compare Col_1:5, where also, as here, it is connected with “hope.” Also Eph_4:21.
sealed — as God’s confirmed children, by the Holy Spirit as the seal (Act_19:1-6; Rom_8:16, Rom_8:23; 1Jn_3:24; see on 2Co_1:22). A seal impressed on a document gives undoubted validity to the contract in it (Joh_3:33; Joh_6:27; compare 2Co_3:3). So the sense of “the love of God shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Ghost” (Rom_5:5), and the sense of adoption given through the Spirit at regeneration (Rom_8:15, Rom_8:16), assure believers of God’s good will to them. The Spirit, like a seal, impresses on the soul at regeneration the image of our Father. The “sealing” by the Holy Spirit is spoken of as past once for all. The witnessing to our hearts that we are the children of God, and heirs (Eph_1:11), is the Spirit’s present testimony, the “earnest of the (coming) inheritance” (Rom_8:16-18).
that Holy Spirit of promise — rather, as the Greek, “The Spirit of promise, even the Holy Spirit”: The Spirit promised both in the Old and New Testaments (Joe_2:28; Zec_12:10; Joh_7:38, Joh_7:39). “The word” promised the Holy Spirit. Those who “believed the word of truth” were sealed by the Spirit accordingly.

Rom 8:8  So then they that are in the flesh [unsaved or under the law]
 cannot please God.

Rom_3:19  Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. [that are under the law] [those that are under the Law must be BORN-AGAIN for they were born of God through Abraham and must be then reborn Spiritually by God to be a true son of God Jew….Born again is for the Jews only as Jesus taught in the law]
Joh 3:3  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man [A JEW] be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:4  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
Joh 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water [natural birth as Abraham seeds] and of the Spirit [Born again by the spirit of God], he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
Joh 3:6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh;
[ Joh 8:39  They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
Joh 8:40  But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
Joh 8:41  Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Joh 8:42  Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
Joh 8:43  Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
Joh 8:44  Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
Joh 8:45  And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.]
and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Rom_6:14  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Rom 3:20  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Rom 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:10  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

1Jn 3:1  Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Jn 3:2  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
1Jn 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Future Glory
Rom 8:18  For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
Rom 8:19  For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Rom 8:20  For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Rom 8:21  Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Rom 8:22  For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
Rom 8:23  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body

1Th 5:23  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
WE are Alive in Christ
Col 2:6  As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
Col 2:7  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Col 2:8  Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Col 2:9  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Col 2:10  And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Eph 1:13  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
