THIS MAN PAUL, CHRIST JESUS ANOINTED AND GAVE THE NEW DISPENSATION,
“the
dispensation of the grace of God”, GODS WILL and NEW COMMAND THAT MAN WAS
TO FOLLOW FOR IT IS THE WILL OF GOD, EVEN FOR ALL MANKIND TO DO TODAY. SAUL OF
TARSUS THEN SIR NAMED PAUL WAS THAT ONE DESCRIBED BY JACOB IN HIS BLESSINGS OF
HIS 12 SONS. I BELIEVE IT WAS ASHADOW OF ONE THAT WAS TO COME OUT OF THAT TRIBE
AS A PROPHECY OF BENJAMIN.

Php 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit,

Joh 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Joh 1:7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that
all men through him might
believe.
Joh 1:8 He was not that Light,
but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
Joh 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the
world.
Joh 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world

him that sent me.
Joh 12:46 I
am come a light into the world, that whosoever
believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Joh 12:47 And if any man hear my words,
and believe not, I judge him not: for I came
not to judge the world, but to save
the world.
Joh 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth
him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Joh 12:49 For I have not spoken of
myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should
say, and what I should speak.
Joh
12:50 And I know that his
commandment is life everlasting:
whatsoever I speak therefore, even as
the Father said unto me, so I speak.

you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about

the roots;
Jud 1:13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering
stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

Walking in the Light
1Jn 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare
unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Jn 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in
darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1Jn 1:7 But
if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have
fellowship one with another, and the blood of
Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the
truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from
all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his
word is not in us.
The Law and the Promise
Gal 3:15 Brethren, I speak after
the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth
thereto.
Gal 3:16 Now to Abraham and
his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as
of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Gal 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was
confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty
years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none
effect.
Gal 3:18 For if the
inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but
God gave it to Abraham by
promise.
Gal 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added
because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was
made; and it was ordained by angels in
the hand of a mediator.
Gal 3:20 Now a mediator is
not a mediator of one, but God is
one.
Gal 3:21 Is the law then against the
promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have
given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Gal 3:22 But the scripture
hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might
be given to them that believe.
Gal 3:23 But before faith
came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should
afterwards be revealed.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law
was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But after that
faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Gal 3:26 For ye are all the
children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:27 For as many of you
as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
Gal 3:28 There is neither
Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor
female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye
Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Jesus the Great High
Priest
Heb 4:14 Seeing then that
we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of
God, let us hold fast our
profession.
Heb 4:15 For we have not an
high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but
was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come
boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain
mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Exo 33:18 And he said, I
beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
Exo 33:19 And he said, I will make all my
goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee;
and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I
will shew mercy.
Rev 5:6 And I beheld, and,
lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the
elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes,
which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.
Rev 5:7 And he came and
took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.
Rev 5:8 And when he had
taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb,
having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the
prayers of saints.
Rev 5:9 And
they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the
seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood
out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall
reign on the earth.
Christ Our Advocate for JEW and GENTILES
1Jn 2:1 My
little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man
sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1Jn 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only,
but also for the sins of the whole world.
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing
made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended
it not.
Joh 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
Joh 1:7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that
all men through him might
believe.
Joh 1:8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that
Light.
Joh 1:9 That
was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
Joh 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the
world knew him not.
Joh 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
sons of God, even
to them that believe on his name:
Joh 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor
of the will of man, but of God.
Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and
dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the
glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full
of grace and truth.
The Testimony of John the
Baptist
Joh 1:19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and
Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
Joh 1:20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the
Christ.
Joh 1:21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I
am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
Joh 1:22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an
answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
Joh 1:23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of
the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
Joh 1:24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
Joh 1:25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then,
if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
Joh 1:26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there
standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
Joh 1:27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose
shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
Joh 1:28 These things were done in
Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. (((The JEWS REQUIRE A

‘bodies’ have to pass through the stage of ‘death’ in consequence of the first

(2Co 5:16 KJV) Wherefore
henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ
after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him
no more.(WE ONLY
KNOW JESUS AS HE SAID TO KNOW HIM AND THAT IS
(Joseph Benson) 2 Corinthians 5:16
Wherefore henceforth — So
that from this time that we knew the love of Christ; know we no man — Neither ourselves nor you, neither the
rest of the apostles, (Gal_2:6,) nor any other person; after the flesh — According to his former
state, country, descent, nobility, riches, power, wisdom. We fear not the
great. We regard not the rich or wise. We account not the least less than
ourselves. We consider all, only in order to save all. Who is he that thus knows no one after the
flesh? In what land do these
Christians live? Yea, if we have known Christ
after the flesh — So as to love him merely with a human
love; or, so as to regard our external relation to him, as being of the same
nation with him, or our having conversed with him on earth, or so as to expect
only temporal benefits from him; or have governed ourselves by any carnal
expectations from the Messiah as a temporal prince who should exalt our nation
to dignity, wealth, and power. Mr. Locke thinks this is said with a reference
to “their Jewish false apostle, who gloried in his circumcision, and perhaps in
his having seen Christ in the flesh, or being some way related to him.” Yet now, henceforth — Since our illumination and conversion; know we him no more — In that way, but wholly after a spiritual
and divine manner, suitable to his state of glory, and our expectations of
spiritual and eternal salvation from him.
Christ the Wisdom and Power of
God
1Co 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to
them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of
God.
1Co 1:19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and
will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
1Co 1:20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of
this world?
1Co 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not
God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that
believe.
1Co 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after
wisdom:
1Co 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock,
and unto the Greeks foolishness;
1Co
1:24 But unto them which
are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of
God.
Toward the Goal
Php 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect:
but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am
apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Php 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have
apprehended: but this
one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things
which are before,
Php 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God
in Christ Jesus.
Php 3:15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if
in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
Php 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by
the same rule, let us mind the same thing.
Php 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk
so as ye have us for an ensample.
Php 3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you
even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:
Php 3:19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind
earthly things.)
Php 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for
the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Php 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like
unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to
subdue all things unto himself.
Our Heavenly Dwelling our citizenship
reside temporarily
2Co 5:1 For we know that if our earthly
house of this
tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with
hands, eternal in the heavens.
2Co 5:2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with
our house which is from heaven:
2Co 5:3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
2Co 5:4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not
for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be
swallowed up of life.
2Co 5:5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto
us the earnest of the Spirit.
2Co 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we
are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
2Co 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
2Co
5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from
the body, and to be present with the Lord.
The Ministry of Reconciliation
our great commotion
2Co 5:11 Knowing therefore the
terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and
I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
(Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) 2 Corinthians 5:11
terror
of the Lord — the
coming judgment, so full of terrors to unbelievers [Estius]. Ellicott and
Alford, after Grotius and Bengel, translate, “The fear of the Lord” (2Co_7:1; Ecc_12:13;
Act_9:31; Rom_3:18;
Eph_5:21).
persuade — Ministers should use the terrors of the Lord to persuade men, not to rouse their
enmity (Jud_1:23).
Bengel, Estius, and Alford explain: “Persuade men” (by our whole lives, 2Co_5:13), namely, of our integrity as ministers. But this
would have been expressed after “persuade,” had it been the sense. The
connection seems as follows: He had been accused of seeking to please and win
men, he therefore says (compare Gal_1:10), “It is as knowing the
terror (or fear) of
the Lord that we persuade men; but (whether men
who hear our preaching recognize our sincerity or not) we are made manifest unto God as acting
on such motives (2Co_4:2); and I
trust also in your consciences.” Those so “manifested” need have no
“terror” as to their being “manifested (English Version, ‘appear’) before the judgment-seat” (2Co_5:10).
(Cambridge Bible) 2 Corinthians 5:11
11–21. The Christian
Ministry one of Reconciliation
11. the terror of the Lord] i.e. “His to-be-dreaded
judgment.” Beza. This translation is due to the Geneva Version, following Beza
and Calvin (Wiclif, drede). Tyndale (whom Cranmer follows) renders
more correctly ‘how the Lorde is to be
feared’ (literally ‘the fear of the Lord,’ timorem Domini, Vulg.). It is not the terror which God
inspires, but the fear which man has of Him that is meant, ‘knowing
what it is to fear God.’
we
persuade men] Rather, perhaps, we win
over men. Compare the use of the Greek word here used in Act_12:20. The Apostle is still keeping in
mind his object of clearing himself from the unjust accusations brought against
him (cf. ch. 2Co_2:17). That the
digressions in ch. 3, 4, 5 have not caused him to lose sight of his main
object, the vindication of the purity of his motives from the aspersions cast
upon them, may be seen by comparing 2Co_5:12
with ch. 2Co_3:1. Having the fear of
God’s judgment continually before his eyes, he persuades men to obey the
Gospel of Christ.
but
we are made manifest unto God]
Literally, we have been made manifest, i.e. we are and have been all
along. He knows the purity of our motives, and will one day bear witness to
them before all men. See note on last verse.
and I
trust also are made manifest in your consciences] Literally, have been made manifest, with
the same meaning as above, either (1) ‘by the change (see 2Co_5:17) which our ministry of Christ has produced
in your hearts and lives,’ or (2) ‘in your conscientious conviction
of our integrity.’ Ch. 2Co_4:2 makes the former the
more probable interpretation. See also chap. 2Co_11:6.
(2Co 5:11
KJV) Knowing therefore
the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and
I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
(Albert Barnes) 2 Corinthians 5:11
Knowing
therefore - We who are apostles, and
who are appointed to preach the gospel, having the fullest assurance of the
terrors of the day of judgment, and of the wrath of God, endeavor to persuade
people to be prepared to meet Him, and to give up their account.
The
terror of the Lord - This
is, of the Lord Jesus, who will be seated on the throne of judgment, and who
will decide the destiny of all people, 2Co_5:10;
compare Matt. 25. The sense is, knowing how much the Lord is to be feared; what
an object of terror and alarm it will be to stand at the judgment-seat; how
fearful and awful will be the consequences of the trial of that day. The Lord
Jesus will be an object of terror and alarm, or it will be a subject inspiring
terror and alarm to stand there on that day, because:
(1) He has all power, and is appointed to
execute judgment;
(2) Because all must there give a strict
and impartial account of all that they have done;
(3) Because the wrath of God will be shown
in the condemnation of the guilty.
It will be a day of awful
wailing and alarm when all the living and the dead shall be arraigned on trial
with reference to their eternal destiny; and when countless hosts of the guilty
and impenitent shall be thrust down to an eternal hell. Who can describe the amazing
terror of the scene? Who can fancy the horrors of the hosts of the guilty and
the wretched who shall then hear that their doom is to be fixed forever in a
world of unspeakable woe? The influence of the knowledge of the terror of the
Lord on the mind of the apostle seems to have been two-fold; first, an
apprehension of it as a personal concern, and a desire to escape it, which led
him to constant self-denial and toil; and secondly, a desire to save others
from being overwhelmed in the wrath of that dreadful day.
We
persuade men - We endeavor to persuade
them to flee from the wrath to come; to be prepared to stand before the
judgment-seat, and to be suited to enter into heaven. Observe here the
uniqueness of the statement. It is not, we drive people; or we endeavor to
alarm people; or we frighten people; or we appeal merely to their fears, but it
is, we persuade people, we endeavor to induce them by all the arts of
persuasion and argument to flee from the wrath to come. The future judgment,
and the scenes of future woe, are not proper topics for mere declamation. To
declaim constantly on hell-fire and perdition; to appeal merely to the fears of
people, is not the way in which Paul and the Saviour preached the gospel. The
knowledge that there would be a judgment, and that the wicked would be sent to
hell, was a powerful motive for Paul to endeavor to “persuade” people to
escape from wrath, and was a motive for the Saviour to weep over Jerusalem, and
to lament its folly, and its doom; Luk_19:41. But they who fill their sermons with the
denunciations of wrath; who dwell on the words “hell” and “damnation,”
for the purpose of rhetoric or declamation, to round a period, or merely to
excite alarm; and who “deal damnation around the land” as if they rejoiced that
people were to be condemned, and in a tone and manner as if they would be
pleased to execute it, have yet to learn the true nature of the way to win
people to God, and the proper effect of those awful truths on the mind. The
true effect is, to produce tenderness, deep feeling, and love; to prompt to the
language of persuasion and of tender entreaty; to lead people to weep over
dying sinners rather than to denounce them; to pray to God to have mercy on
them rather than to use the language of severity, or to assume tones as if they
would be pleased to execute the awful wrath of God.
But
we are made manifest unto God - The
meaning of this is, probably, that God sees that we are sincere and upright in
our aims and purposes. He is acquainted with our hearts. All our motives are
known to him, and he sees that it is our aim to promote his glory, and to save
the souls of people. This is probably said to counteract the charge which might
have been brought against him by some of the disaffected in Corinth, that he
was influenced by improper motives and aims. To meet this, Paul says, that God
knew that he was endeavoring to save souls, and that he was actuated by a
sincere desire to rescue them from the impending terrors of the day of
judgment.
And I
trust also ... - And I trust also you are
convinced of our integrity and uprightness of aim. The same sentiment is
expressed in other words in 2Co_4:2.
It is an appeal which he makes to them, and the expression of an earnest and
confident assurance that they knew and felt that his aim was upright, and his
purpose sincere.
2Co 5:12 For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you
occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in
appearance, and not in heart.
2Co 5:13 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be
sober, it is
for your cause.
2Co 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge,
that if one died for all, then were all dead:
2Co 5:15 And that
he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto
themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
2Co 5:16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though
we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are
passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath
given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto
himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us
the word of reconciliation.
2Co 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did
beseech you by
us: we pray you in
Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Spiritual Blessings in Christ
Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places
in Christ:
Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the
world,(HE KNEW HE WAS TO DO THIS THEN) that we should be holy and
without blame before him in love:
Rom 16:25 Now to him that
is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
Rom 16:26 But now is made manifest, and
by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting
God, made
known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
Rom 16:27 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for
ever. Amen.
Eph 1:5 Having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself,
according to the good pleasure of his will,
Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us
accepted in the beloved.
Eph 1:7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of his grace;
Eph 1:8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and
prudence;
Eph 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to
his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Eph 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather
together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are
on earth; even
in him:
Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being
predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the
counsel of his own will:
Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted
in Christ.
Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed
with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph
1:14 Which is the
earnest of our inheritance until
the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his
glory.
Life in the Spirit
Rom 8:1 There is
therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit. (THIS 2nd PART WAS ADDED TO THE
ORIGINAL THAT ACTUALLY ENDED AT THE COMMA)
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit
of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and
death.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could
not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the
law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit.
Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the
flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded
is death;
but to be spiritually minded is
life and peace.
Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against
God: for it is
not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Rom 8:8 So
then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Rom 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of
righteousness.
Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead
dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your
mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Heirs with Christ
Rom 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live
after the flesh.
Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit
do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit
of God, they are
the sons of God.
Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit
of bondage again to fear; but ye have received
the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth
witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs
with Christ;
if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Future Glory
Rom 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be
revealed in us.
Rom 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Rom 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but
by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
Rom 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the
bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Rom 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in
pain together until now.
Rom 8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the
firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting
for the adoption, to wit,
the redemption of our body.
Rom 8:24 For we are saved by hope:
but
hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet
hope for?
Rom 8:25 But if we hope for that we
see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
Rom 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know
not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Rom 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Rom 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be
conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many
brethren.
Rom 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he
called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also
glorified.
God's Everlasting Love
Rom 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be
for us, who can be against us?
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also
freely give us all things?
Rom 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is
God that justifieth.
Rom 8:34 Who is he
that condemneth? It is
Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right
hand of God, who also maketh intercession
for us.
Christ Our Advocate
We need to know
this for our learning
1Jn 2:1 My little children, these things
write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an
advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1Jn 2:2 And he is the propitiation
for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of
the whole world.
1Jn 2:3 And hereby we do know
that we know him(((YOU DO NOT WANT HIM TO SAY “DEPART FROM ME FOR I NEVER KNEW YOU”!))), if we keep his commandments(TRUTH).
1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth
not his commandments(TRUTH), is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word(OF THE TRUTH), in him verily is the love of God perfected(HE IS A MATURED BELIEVER OF THE GRACE
GOSPEL):
hereby know we that we
are in him.
1Jn 2:6 He that saith he abideth
in him ought himself also so to walk, even
as he walked. (HE
WALKED IN THE LIGHT OF GOD AS WE OUGHT TO ALSO WALK)
Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or
persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long;
we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Rom 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors
through him that loved us.
Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Rom 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor
any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of
God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body;
and be ye thankful.
Paul to the
unbeliever GENTILE
Act 17:23 For as
I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription,
TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto
you.
Act 17:24 God that made the world and all
things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in
temples made with hands;
Act 17:25 Neither is worshipped with men's
hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath,
and all things;
Act 17:26 And hath made of one blood all
nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined
the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
Act 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if
haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every
one of us:
Act 17:28 For in him we live, and move, and
have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also
his offspring.
Act 17:29 Forasmuch then as we are the
offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or
silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.
Act 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God
winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Act 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in
the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto
all men, in that he hath raised him
from the dead.
Act 17:32 And when they heard of the
resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again
of this matter.
Act 17:33 So Paul departed from among
them.
Act 17:34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him,
and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with
them.
For the believer the LORD may or may not answer
our prayer BUT HE WILL GIVE TO US the peace of God!
Php 4:3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which
laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers,
whose names are in
the book of life.
Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
Php 4:5 Let your moderation be
known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
moderation — from a Greek root, “to yield,” whence yieldingness [Trench]; or from a root, “it is fitting,” whence “reasonableness of dealing” [Alford], that considerateness for others, not urging one’s own rights to the uttermost, but waiving a part, and
thereby rectifying the injustices of justice. The archetype of this grace is
God, who presses not the strictness of His law against us as we deserve (Psa_130:3, Psa_130:4); though having exacted the
fullest payment for us from our Divine Surety. There are included in “moderation,” candor
and kindliness. Joy in the Lord raises us above rigorism
towards others (Php_4:5),
and carefulness (Php_4:6)
as to one’s own affairs. Sadness produces morose harshness towards others, and a
troublesome spirit in ourselves.
Let ... be known —
that is, in your conduct to others, let
nothing inconsistent with “moderation” be seen. Not a precept to make a display of moderation. Let this grace “be known” to men in acts; let “your requests be made to God” in
word (Php_4:6).
Php 4:6 Be
careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving(BE
THANKFUL) let
your requests be made known unto God.
Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Act 17:24 God that made the world and all
things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in
temples made with hands;
Act 17:25 Neither is worshipped with men's
hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath,
and
before appointed, all things;
Act 17:26 And hath made of one blood all
nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined
the times and the bounds of their habitation;
Act 17:27 That they should seek the Lord, if
haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every
one of us:
Act
17:28 For in him we
live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have
said, For we are also his offspring (Paul
is speaking to the Greek unbelievers
saying you better wake up before it’s too late.)
GIVE GOD all
thanksgiving for your being and being alive in pain or in JOY!
Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord
alway: and
again I say, Rejoice.
Php 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every
thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made
known unto God.
Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall
keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever
things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just,
whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely,
whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Php 4:9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and
the God of peace shall be with you.
God's Provision
Php 4:10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your
care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked
opportunity.
Php 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in
whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Php 4:12 I know both how to be abased, and I
know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be
full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ
which strengtheneth me.
Php 4:14 Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with
my affliction.
Php 4:15 Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the
gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning
giving and receiving, but ye only.
Php 4:16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my
necessity.
Php 4:17 Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound
to your account.
Php 4:18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of
Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a
sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
Php 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in
glory by Christ Jesus.
Php
4:20 Now unto God and
our Father be glory for ever and
ever. Amen.

(Matthew Henry) Titus 2:11-14
Here we have the grounds or considerations upon which all the foregoing
directions are urged, taken from the nature and design of the gospel, and the
end of Christ's death.
I. From the nature and design of the gospel. Let young and old, men and
women, masters and servants, and Titus himself, let all sorts do their
respective duties, for this is the very aim and business of Christianity, to
instruct, and help, and form persons, under all distinctions and relations, to
a right frame and conduct. For this,
1. They are put under the dispensation of the grace of
God, so the gospel is called, Eph_3:2. It is grace in respect of the
spring of it - the free favour and good-will of God, not any merit or desert in
the creature; as manifesting and declaring this good-will in an eminent and
signal manner; and as it is the means of conveying and working grace in the
hearts of believers. Now grace is obliging and constraining to goodness: Let not sin reign, but yield yourselves unto God; for you are not under
the law, but under grace, Rom_6:12-14. The love of Christ
constrains us not to live to self, but to him (2Co_5:14, 2Co_5:15); without this effect, grace
is received in vain.
2. This gospel grace brings salvation (reveals and
offers it to sinners and ensures it to believers) - salvation from sin and
wrath, from death and hell. Hence it is called the word of life;
it brings to faith, and so to life, the life of holiness now and of happiness
hereafter. The law is the ministration of death, but the gospel the
ministration of life and peace. This therefore must be received as salvation
(its rules minded, its commands obeyed), that the end of it may be obtained, the salvation of the soul. And more inexcusable will the
neglecters of this grace of God bringing salvation now be, since,
3. It hath appeared, or shone out more clearly and
illustriously than ever before. The old dispensation was comparatively dark and
shadowy; this is a clear and shining light; and, as it is now more bright, so
more diffused and extensive also. For,
4. It hath appeared to all men; not to the Jews
only, as the glory of God appeared at mount Sinai to that particular people,
and out of the view of all others; but gospel grace is open to all, and all are
invited to come and partake of the benefit of it, Gentiles as well as Jews. The
publication of it is free and general: Disciple all nations: Preach
the gospel to every creature. The pale is broken down; there is no such
enclosure now as formerly. The preaching of Jesus Christ, which
was kept secret since the world began, now is made manifest, and by the
scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting
God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith, Rom_16:25, Rom_16:26. The doctrine of grace and
salvation by the gospel is for all ranks and conditions of men (slaves and
servants, as well as masters), therefore engaging and encouraging all to
receive and believe it, and walk suitably to it, adorning it in all things.
5. This gospel revelation is to teach, and not by
way of information and instruction only, as a schoolmaster does his scholars,
but by way of precept and command, as a sovereign who gives laws to his
subjects. It directs what to shun and what to follow, what to avoid and what to
do. The gospel is not for speculation only or chiefly, but for practice and
right ordering of life; for it teaches us,
(1.) To abandon sin: Denying ungodliness and worldly
lusts; to renounce and have no more to do with these, as we have had: Put off, concerning the former conversation, the old man which is
corrupt; that is, the whole body of sins, here distributed into ungodliness and worldly lusts. “Put away ungodliness and irreligion, all unbelief, neglect or
disesteem of the divine Being, not loving, nor fearing, nor trusting in him,
nor obeying him as we should, neglecting his ordinances, slighting his worship,
profaning his name or day. Thus deny ungodliness (hate and put it away); and worldly
lusts, all
corrupt and vicious desires and affections that prevail in worldly men, and
carry out to worldly things the lust of the flesh also, and of
the eye, and the pride of life, all sensuality and filthiness, covetous
desires and ambition, seeking and valuing more the praise of men than of God;
put away all these.” An earthly sensual
conversation suits not a heavenly calling. Those that are Christ's have
crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. They have done it by
covenant-engagement and promise, and have initially and prevailingly done it in
act; they are going on in the work, cleansing themselves more and more from all
filthiness of flesh and spirit. Thus the gospel first unteaches that which is
evil, to abandon sin; and then,
(2.) To make conscience of that which is good: To live
soberly, righteously, and godly, etc. Religion is not made up of
negatives only; there must be doing good as well as eschewing evil; in these conjunctly
is sincerity proved and the gospel adorned. We should live soberly with respect
to ourselves, in the due government of our appetites and passions, keeping the
limits of moderation and temperance, avoiding all inordinate excesses; and
righteously towards all men, rendering to all their due, and injuring none, but
rather doing good to others, according to our ability and their need: this
seems a part of justice and righteousness, for we are not born for ourselves
alone, and therefore may not live to ourselves only. We are
members one of another, and must seek every man another's
wealth, 1Co_10:24;
1Co_12:25. The public, especially, which
includes the interests of all, must have the regards of all. Selfishness is a
sort of unrighteousness; it robs others of that share in us which is their due.
How amiable then will a just and righteous conduct be! It secures and promotes
all interests, not particular only, but general and public, and so contributes
to the peace and happiness of the world. Live righteously therefore as well as
soberly. And godly towards God, in the duties of his worship and service.
Regards to him indeed should run through all. Whether you eat, or
drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God, 1Co_10:31. Personal and relative duties
must be done in obedience to his commands, with due aim at pleasing and
honouring him, from principles of holy love and fear of him. But there is an
express and direct duty also that we owe to God, namely, belief and
acknowledgment of his being and perfections, paying him internal and external
worship and homage, - loving, fearing, and trusting in him, - depending on him,
and devoting ourselves to him, - observing all those religious duties and
ordinances that he has appointed, - praying to him, praising him, and
meditating on his word and works. This is godliness, looking and coming to God,
as our state now is, not immediately, but as he has manifested himself in
Christ; so does the gospel direct and require. To go to God in any other way,
namely, by saints or angels, is unsuitable, yea, contrary to the gospel rule
and warrant. All communications from God to us are through his Son, and our
returns must also be by him. God in Christ we must look at as the object of our
hope and worship. Thus must we exercise ourselves to godliness, without which
there can be no adorning of that gospel which is according to it, which teaches
and requires such a deportment. A gospel conversation must needs be a godly
conversation, expressing our love and fear and reverence of God, our hope and
trust and confidence in him, as manifested in his Son. We are the
circumcision (who have in truth what was signified by that sacrament) who worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no
confidence in the flesh. See in how small a compass our duty is
comprised; it is put into few words, denying ungodliness and
worldly lusts, and living soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present
world. The gospel teaches us not only how to believe and hope well, but
also to live well, as becomes that faith and hope in this present world, and as
expectants of another and better. There is the world that now is, and that
which is to come; the present is the time and place of our trial, and the
gospel teaches us to live well here, not, however, as our final state, but with
an eye chiefly to a future: for it teaches us in all,
(3.) To look for the glories of another world, to which a sober,
righteous, and godly life in this is preparative: Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious
appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. Hope, by a
metonymy, is put for the thing hoped for, namely, heaven and the felicities
thereof, called emphatically that hope, because it is the
great thing we look and long and wait for; and a blessed hope,
because, when attained, we shall be completely happy for ever. And
the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
This denotes both the time of the accomplishing of our hope and the sureness
and greatness of it: it will be at the second appearing of Christ, when he
shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy
angels, Luk_9:26. His own glory which he had before the world was;
and his Father's, being the express image of his person,
and as God - man, his delegated ruler and Judge; and of the holy angels, as his
ministers and glorious attendants. His first coming was in
meanness, to satisfy justice and purchase happiness; his second will be in majesty, to bestow and
instate his people in it. Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many;
and unto those that look for him will he appear the second time, without sin,
unto salvation, Heb_9:28. The great God and our Saviour (or even our Saviour) Jesus Christ; for they
are not two subjects, but one only, as appears by the single article, tou megalou Theou kai Sōtēros, not kai tou Sōtēros, and so is kai rendered 1Co_15:24, When he shall
have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father;
tō Theō kai Patri. Christ
then is the great God, not figuratively, as
magistrates and others are sometimes called gods, or as appearing and acting in
the name of God, but properly and absolutely, the true God
(1Jn_5:20), the mighty God
(Isa_9:6), who, being in
the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, Php_2:6. In his second coming he will
reward his servants, and bring them to glory with him. Observe, [1.] There is a common and blessed
hope for all true Christians in the other world. If in this life only they had
hope in Christ, they were of all men the most miserable, 1Co_15:19. By hope is meant the thing
hoped for, namely, Christ himself, who is called our hope
(1Ti_1:1), and blessedness in and
through him, even riches of glory (Eph_1:18), hence fitly termed here that blessed hope. [2.]
The design of the gospel is to stir up all to a good life by this blessed hope.
Gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for
the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
1Pe_1:13. To the same purport here, Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, live soberly, righteously, and
godly, in this present world, looking for the blessed hope; not as
mercenaries, but as dutiful and thankful Christian. What manner
of persons ought you to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for
and hastening to the coming of the day of God! 2Pe_3:11, 2Pe_3:12. Looking and hastening, that
is, expecting and diligently preparing for it. [3.] At, and in, the glorious appearing of Christ will the blessed
hope of Christians be attained; for their felicity will be this, To
be where he is, and to behold his glory, Joh_17:24. The glory of the great God
and our Saviour will then break out as the sun. Though in the exercise of his
judiciary power he will appear as the Son of man, yet will he be mightily
declared to be the Son of God too. The divinity, which on earth was much veiled,
will shine out then as the sun in its strength. Hence the work and design of
the gospel are to raise the heart to wait for this second appearing of Christ. We are begotten again to a lively hope of it (1Pe_1:3), turned to serve
the living God, and wait for his Son from heaven, 1Th_1:9, 1Th_1:10. Christians are marked by
this, expecting their Master's coming (Luk_12:36), loving his
appearance, 2Ti_4:8.
Let us then look to this hope; let our loins be girt, and our lights burning,
and ourselves like those who wait for their Lord; the day or hour we know not,
but he that shall come will come, and will not tarry, Heb_10:37. [4.] The comfort and joy of Christians are that their Saviour is
the great God, and will gloriously manifest himself at his second coming. Power
and love, majesty and mercy, will then appear together in the highest lustre,
to the terror and confusion of the wicked, but to the everlasting triumph and
rejoicing of the godly. Were he not thus the great God, and not a mere
creature, he could not be their Saviour, nor their hope. Thus of the
considerations to enforce the directions of all sorts to their respective
duties from the nature and design of the gospel. And herewith is connected
another ground, namely,
II. From the end of Christ's death:
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all
iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works,
Tit_2:14. To bring
us to holiness and happiness was the end of Christ's death, as well as the
scope of his doctrine. Here we have,
1. The purchaser of salvation - Jesus Christ, that
great God and our Saviour, who saves not simply as God, much less as man
alone; but as God - man, two natures in one person: man, that he might obey,
and suffer, and die, for man, and be meet to deal with him and for him; and
God, that he might support the manhood, and give worth and efficacy to his
undertakings, and have due regard to the rights and honour of the deity, as
well as the good of his creature, and bring about the latter to the glory of
the former. Such a one became us; and this was,
2. The price of our redemption: He gave himself.
The Father gave him, but he gave himself too; and, in the freeness and
voluntariness, as well as the greatness of the offering, lay the acceptableness
and merit of it. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay
down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay
it down of myself, Joh_10:17, Joh_10:18. So Joh_17:19, “For their sakes I
sanctify myself, or separate and devote myself to this work, to be both a priest and a
sacrifice to God for the sins of men.” The human nature was the
offering, and the divine the altar, sanctifying the gift, and the whole the act
of the person. He gave himself a ransom for all, 1Ti_2:6. Once in the end
of the world hath he appeared, to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
He was the priest and sacrifice too. We are redeemed, not with
silver and gold, but the precious blood of Christ (1Pe_1:18, 1Pe_1:19), called the
blood of God (Act_20:28), that is, of him who is God.
3. The persons for whom: For us, us poor perishing
sinners, gone off from God, and turned rebels against him. He gave himself for us, not only for our good, but in our stead. Messiah was cut
off, not for himself, but for us. He suffered, the just for the
unjust, that he might bring us to God, 1Pe_3:18. He was made sin
for us (an offering and sacrifice for sin), that we might
be made the righteousness of God in him, 2Co_5:21. Wonderful condescension and
grace! He loved us, and gave himself for us; what can we
do less than love and give up ourselves to him? Especially considering,
4. The ends
of his giving himself for us, (1.) That he might redeem us from
all iniquity. This is fitted to the first lesson, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts. Christ gave himself to redeem us from
these, therefore put them away. To love and live in sin is to trample under
foot redeeming blood, to despise and reject one of the greatest benefits of it,
and to act counter to its design. But how could the short sufferings of Christ
redeem us from all iniquity? Answer, Through the infinite
dignity of his person. He who was God suffered, though not as God. The acts and
properties of either nature are attributed to the person. God purchased his
church with his own blood, Act_20:28.
Could payment be made at once, no need of suffering for ever. A mere creature
could not do this, from the finiteness of his nature; but God - man could. The great God and our Saviour gave himself for us: this accounts
for it. By one offering he hath for ever perfected those that are
sanctified, Heb_9:25, Heb_9:26; Heb_10:14.
He needed not to offer himself often, nor could he be holden of death, when he
had once undergone it. Happy end and fruit of Christ's death, redemption from
all iniquity! Christ died for this: and, (2.) To purify to
himself a peculiar people. This enforces the second lesson: To live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.
Christ died to purify as well as to pardon - to obtain grace, to heal the nature,
as well as to free from guilt and condemnation. He gave himself for his church,
to cleanse it. Thus does he make to himself
a peculiar people, by purifying them. Thus are they distinguished from
the world that lies in wickedness; they are born of God, and assimilated to
him, bear his image, are holy as their heavenly Father is holy. Observe,
Redemption from sin and sanctification of the nature go together, and both make
a peculiar people unto God: freedom from guilt and condemnation, freedom from
the power of lusts, and purification of soul by the Spirit. These are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and so a peculiar people. And, (3.) Zealous of good
works. This peculiar people, as they are made so by grace purifying
them, so must they be seen to be so by doing good, and a zeal therein. Observe,
The gospel is not a doctrine of licentiousness, but of holiness and good life.
We are redeemed from our vain conversation, to serve God in
holiness and righteousness all the days of our life. Let us see then
that we do good, and have zeal in it; only looking that zeal be guided by
knowledge and spirited with love, directed to the glory of God, and always in
some good thing. And thus of the motive to the duties directed, from the end of
Christ's death.
(Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) Titus 2:13
(Php_3:20, Php_3:21).
Looking
for —
with constant expectation (so the Greek)
and with joy (Rom_8:19). This will
prove the antidote to worldly lusts, and the stimulus to “live
in this present world” conformably to this expectation. The Greek
is translated, “waiting for,” in Luk_2:25.
that — Greek, “the.”
blessed — bringing blessedness (Rom_4:7, Rom_4:8).
hope — that is, object of hope (Rom_8:24; Gal_5:5;
Col_1:5).
the
glorious appearing —
There is but one Greek article to both “hope” and “appearing,”
which marks their close connection (the hope being about to be realized only at the appearing of Christ). Translate, “The blessed hope and
manifestation (compare Note,
see on Tit_2:11) of the glory.” The Greek for “manifestation” is
translated “brightness” in 2Th_2:8. As His “coming”
(Greek, “parousia”) expresses the fact; so “brightness, appearing,” or “manifestation” (epiphaneia) expresses His personal visibility when He shall come.
the
great God and our Saviour Jesus —
There is but one Greek article to “God” and “Savior,” which
shows that both are predicated of one and the same Being. “Of Him who is at
once the great God and our Savior.” Also (2) “appearing” (epiphaneia) is never by Paul predicated of God the Father (Joh_1:18; 1Ti_6:16),
or even of “His glory” (as Alford explains it): it is invariably applied to Christ’s coming, to which (at
His first advent, compare 2Ti_1:10) the kindred verb “appeared”
(epephanee), Tit_2:11,
refers (1Ti_6:14; 2Ti_4:1, 2Ti_4:8).
Also (3) in the context (Tit_2:14)
there is no reference to the Father, but to Christ alone; and here there is no
occasion for reference to the Father
in the exigencies of the context. Also (4) the expression “great
God,” as applied to Christ, is in accordance with the context, which refers to the glory of His
appearing; just as “the
true God” is predicated of Christ, 1Jn_5:20. The phrase occurs nowhere else in the New
Testament, but often in the Old Testament. Deu_7:21;
Deu_10:17, predicated of Jehovah,
who, as their manifested Lord, led the Israelites through the wilderness,
doubtless the Second Person in the Trinity. Believers now look for the
manifestation of His glory, inasmuch as they shall share in it. Even the
Socinian explanation, making “the great God” to be the Father, “our Savior,” the Son, places God and Christ on
an equal relation to “the glory” of the future appearing: a fact
incompatible with the notion that Christ is not divine; indeed it would be
blasphemy so to couple any mere created being with God.
(John Gill) Titus 2:13
Looking
for that blessed hope,....
Not the grace of hope; though that being a good hope through grace, and a hope
of blessedness, may be called a blessed hope; yet this the saints have already
implanted in their hearts in regeneration, and cannot be said to look for it:
rather Christ, the object and ground of hope, who is our hope, and Christ in us
the hope of glory, who is blessed for evermore; and in the enjoyment of whom
the happiness of the saints hereafter will greatly consist; and whom they look
for, and expect from heaven, and who is expressly mentioned in the next clause:
but as this may be something distinct from that, it may be best, by this
blessed hope, to understand the thing hoped for, eternal glory and happiness;
called elsewhere the hope of righteousness, and the hope laid up in heaven, Gal_5:5 and which will lie in the beatific
vision of God and Christ; in a perfect knowledge of them, in communion with them,
and conformity to them; and in the society of angels and glorified saints; and
in a freedom from all evil, outward and inward, and in the possession of all
good: and to be looking for this, is to be desiring it with the heart and
affections set upon it, longing to be in the enjoyment of it, and yet waiting
patiently in the exercise of faith and hope; for looking includes all the three
graces, faith, hope, and love; and particularly the former, which is always
attended with the latter; for it is such a looking for this blessedness, as
that a man firmly believes he shall partake of it: and there is good reason for
a regenerate man so to look for it; since it is his Father's gift of free
grace, and is laid up for him; Christ is gone to prepare it by his presence,
mediation, and intercession; yea, he is gone, as the forerunner, to take
possession of it in his name: this man is begotten again to a lively hope of
it; he is called by the grace of God unto it; he is a child of God, and so an
heir of it; he has a right unto it, through the justifying righteousness of
Christ, and has a meetness for it through the sanctifying grace of the Spirit;
and who is in him as the earnest and pledge of it: now such a firm expectation
of the heavenly glory does the Gospel, the doctrine of the grace of God, teach,
direct, and encourage to; for these words must be read in connection with the
preceding, as a further instruction of the Gospel, as well as what follows:
and
the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Saviour Jesus Christ; not two divine persons, only one, are
here intended; for the word: rendered "appearing", is never used of
God the Father, only of the second person; and the propositive article is not
set before the word "Saviour", as it would, if two distinct persons
were designed; and the copulative "and" is exegetical, and may he
rendered thus, "and the glorious appearing of the great God, even our
Saviour Jesus Christ"; who, in the next verse, is said to give himself for
the redemption of his people: so that here is a very illustrious proof of the
true and proper deity of Christ, who will appear at his second coming; for of
that appearance are the, words to be understood, as the great God, in all the
glories and perfections of his divine nature; as well as a Saviour, which is
mentioned to show that he will appear to the salvation of his people, which he
will then put them in the full possession of; and that the brightness of his
divine Majesty will not make them afraid: and this appearance will be a glorious
one; for Christ will come in his own glory, in the glory of his deity,
particularly his omniscience and omnipotence will be very conspicuous; and in
his glory as Mediator, which will be beheld by all the saints; and in his glory
as a Judge, invested with power and authority from his Father, which will be
terrible to sinners; and in the glory of his human nature, with which it is now
crowned; and in his Father's glory, in the same he had with him before the
world was, and which is the same with his, and in that which he will receive
from him as man and Mediator, and as the Judge of the whole earth; and in the
glory of his holy angels, being attended with all his mighty ones: to which may
be added, that saints will be raised from the dead, and with the living ones
appear with Christ in glory, and make up the bride, the Lamb's wife, having the
glory of God upon her; so that this will be a grand appearance indeed. Now this
the Gospel directs, and instructs believers to look for, to love, to hasten to,
most earnestly desire, and yet patiently wait for, most firmly believing that
it will be: and this the saints have reason to look for, with longing desire
and affection, and with pleasure, since it will be not only glorious in itself,
but advantageous to them; they will then be glorified with Christ, and be for
ever with him.
Peace with God Through Faith
Rom 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ:
Rom 5:2 By whom also we have access
by
faith into this grace wherein we stand, and
rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations
also: knowing
that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom 5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:
Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed
abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Rom 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure
for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8 But God commendeth
his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God
by the death of his Son, much
more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Romans 5:9-10
Much more then, being —
“having been”
now justified by his blood, we shall be
saved from wrath through him.
Romans 5:10
For if, when we were
enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being
now — “having now been”
reconciled, we shall be saved by his life —
that is “If
that part of the Savior's work which cost Him His blood, and which had to be
wrought for persons incapable of the least sympathy either with His love or His
labors in their behalf - even our ‘justification,’ our ‘reconciliation’ - is already completed; how much more will He do all that remains to be
done, since He has it to do, not by death agonies any more, but in untroubled
‘life,’ and no longer for enemies,
but for friends - from whom, at every stage of it, He receives the grateful response of redeemed and adoring souls?” To be “saved
from wrath through Him,” denotes here the whole work of Christ towards believers, from the
moment of justification, when the wrath of God is
turned away from them, till the Judge on the great white throne shall discharge
that wrath upon them that “obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ”; and that work may all
be summed up in “keeping them from falling, and presenting them faultless
before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy” (Jud_1:24): thus are they “saved from wrath through Him.”

Personal enemies; the proper force of the Gr. word. Cp. Col_1:21. See below on Rom_8:7.
reconciled to God] On “reconciliation,” see on Rom_5:1. Here certainly the idea of
the conciliation of man’s will to God (as a result of the
Propitiation revealed) is suggested. But even here it is scarcely the main
idea. The language, carefully weighed, points more to God’s acceptance of the sinner than to the sinner’s acceptance of God. For
the case is put thus:—“When we were enemies, God was gracious to us: much more (as to our
apprehension) will He be gracious to us still.”
How was He gracious to us then? Surely by the gift of justification (see Rom_5:9). As our Judge, He acquitted
us; in other words, He was reconciled to us, and adopted us. Therefore, as our
reconciled Father, He will surely be equally gracious to us still.—Through this context St Paul has not yet come to the result of pardon on the will. When he here uses the phrase “reconciled to God” it is evidently with main reference to the removal
of a judicial bar.—Absalom, for instance, was reconciled to David—restored to
his filial position—only when David put aside his just wrath: till this was done, no change of will in Absalom
would be reconciliation.
by the death] As propitiation, with a view to justification; Rom_3:24-25.
being reconciled] He does not say “being friends;” which, as just stated, is not yet the idea in point. The barrier of condemnation is taken away; therefore à fortiori the Judge, who is also the Father, will continue to us His love.

The “in”

appearing to judgment and salvation,) serves to explain this passage. Q. d., “We

these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned

2Pe 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also,

2Pe 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and

2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an

through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of
God, and of Jesus our Lord,
2Pe 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that
pertain unto life and godliness,
through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

2Pe 1:12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in

ABSOLUTE
(Heb 9:22 KJV) And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and
without shedding of blood is no remission.
(Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) Hebrews 9:22
almost — to be joined with “all things,” namely almost all things under the old dispensation. The exceptions
to all things being purified by blood
are, Exo_19:10; Lev_15:5, etc.; Lev_16:26,
Lev_16:28; Lev_22:6; Num_31:22-24.
without — Greek, “apart from.”
shedding
of blood — shed in the slaughter of the victim, and poured
out at the altar subsequently. The pouring out
of the blood on the altar is the main part of the sacrifice (Lev_17:11), and it could not have place apart
from the previous shedding of the
blood in the slaying. Paul has, perhaps, in mind here, Luk_22:20, “This cup is the new
testament in my blood, which is shed for you.”
is — Greek, “takes place”: comes to pass.
remission — of sins: a favorite expression of Luke,
Paul’s companion. Properly used of remitting a debt (Mat_6:12; Mat_18:27,
Mat_18:32); our sins are debts. On
the truth here, compare Lev_5:11-13,
an exception because of poverty, confirming the general rule.
And without shedding of blood is no
remission - Remission or
forgiveness of sins. That is, though some things were purified by fire and water, yet when
the matter pertained to the forgiveness
of sins, it was “universally” true that no sins were pardoned
except by the shedding of blood. Some impurities might be
removed by water and fire, but the stain
of “sin” could be removed only by
blood. This declaration referred in its primary meaning, to the Jewish
rites, and the sense is, that under that dispensation it was universally true
that in order to the forgiveness of sin blood must be shed. But it contains a truth of
higher order and importance still. “It is universally true that sin never has
been, and never will be forgiven, except in connection with, and in virtue of
the shedding of blood.” It is on this principle that the plan of salvation
by the atonement is based, and on this that God in fact bestows pardon upon
people. There is not the slightest evidence that any man has ever been pardoned
except through the blood shed for the remission of sins. The infidel who
rejects the atonement has no evidence that his sins are pardoned; the man who
lives in the neglect of the gospel, though he has abundant evidence that he is
a sinner, furnishes none that his sins are forgiven; and the Mussulman and the
pagan can point to no proof that their sins are blotted out. It remains to be
demonstrated that one single member of the human family has ever had the
slightest evidence of pardoned sin, except through the blood of expiation. In
the divine arrangement there is no principle better established than this, that
all sin which is forgiven is remitted through the blood of the atonement; a
principle which has never been departed from hitherto, and which never will be.
It follows, therefore:
(1) That no sinner can hope for
forgiveness except through the blood of Christ;
(2) That if people are ever
saved they must be willing to rely on the merits of that blood;
(3) That all people are on a
level in regard to salvation, since all are to be saved in the same way; and,
(4) That there will be one and
the same song in heaven - the song of redeeming love.
(Heb 9:21 KJV) Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all
the vessels of the ministry.
(Joseph Benson) Hebrews 9:21-22
Moreover — To
prefigure the efficacy of the sacrifice of Christ to render our acts of worship
acceptable; he
sprinkled with blood the tabernacle — The altar, and mercy-seat; and all the vessels of
the ministry — All
that were used in the tabernacle service. See the margin. And almost all the things — Pertaining to the tabernacle and service
of God, (the apostle says almost all things,
because some were cleansed with water, and some with fire, Num_31:23, and some with the ashes of the red
heifer, Num_19:2-10,) are by the law purged from any ceremonial
defilement with blood —
Offered or sprinkled; and without shedding of blood — According to the law; is no remission — Of sins, neither typical nor real.
Or he means, no remission was granted on the day of atonement without blood. All this
pointed to the blood of Christ, effectually cleansing from all sin, and
intimated that there can be no purification from it by any other means.
Because some fancy that a real pardon of
sin was obtained by the atonements of the Mosaic law, and especially by those made on the tenth of the
seventh month, concerning which it is said, (Lev_16:30,) on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you
that you may be clean from all your sins:
it may be proper to observe here, that “this cleansing of the people from all their sins could not possibly
have any reference to the punishments of the life to come, because the
atonement was made for all the people
indiscriminately, whether penitent or not, consequently it could not be a cleansing
of their consciences, but of their bodies; redeeming them from those civil
penalties which God, in the character of their chief magistrate, would have
inflicted on them for breaking the laws of the state, unless these atonements
had been made. A remission of that kind all the people of the congregation might receive,
and it was the only remission which, in a body, they could receive through the
sacrifices mentioned. And from the inefficacy of the annual atonements, made on
the day above mentioned, to procure for the people the eternal pardon of
their sins, it follows that the daily atonements, made by the ordinary priests,
had no greater efficacy in procuring their pardon.”

1Th 1:2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you
in our prayers;
1Th 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of
love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and
our Father;
1Th 1:4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
1Th 1:5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in
power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of
men we were among you for your sake.
1Th 1:6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received
the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:
1Th 1:7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and
Achaia.
1Th 1:8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in
Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread
abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
1Th 1:9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had
unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true
God;
1Th 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the
dead, even
Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

The word is certainly to be omitted on documentary evidence. A new and separate

are ye subject to ordinances?] R.V. “do ye subject yourselves to
ordinances?” Lightfoot, “are ye overridden with precepts,
ordinances?” The latter rendering is slightly too strong; but
both indicate the main point of the Greek. The religion of the Colossians was
becoming one of mechanical rule and measure, a round of ordered “practices,”
imposed by directors, to expiate or purify by their performance. The life of
faith and love was giving way to an arbitrary discipline, far different from
the obedience of the heart to the will of God in Christ.
(Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) Colossians 2:19
Translate, “Not
holding fast the Head.” He who does not hold
Christ solely and supremely above all others, does not hold Him at all
[Bengel]. The want of firm holding of Christ has set him loose to (pry into,
and so) “tread haughtily on (pride himself on) things which he hath seen.” Each
must hold fast the Head for himself, not merely be attached to the other
members, however high in the body [Alford].

represents exactly the construction of the Greek, and is truer to the shades of

lighter and less deliberate touch than the first, and so here conveys a
climax of prohibition.
The prohibitions in question would be those of the Mosaic law,
developed and exaggerated by the Pharisaic schools. Schoettgen (Horœ Hebr. in N. T.) quotes from the Talmud just such precepts: “Touch not a vessel, till thou hast
washed hands and feet from (its) brim;” “They say to a Nazirite, Drink not … shave not … &c.” “The Latin commentators, Hilary and
Pelagius, suppose these prohibitions to be the Apostle’s own, thus making a
complete shipwreck of the sense” (Lightfoot). In much more modern comments the
same mistake appears.

(Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) Colossians 2:21
Compare Col_2:16, “meat ... drink.” He
gives instances of the “ordinances” (Col_2:20) in the words of their imposers. There is an
ascending climax of superstitious prohibitions. The first Greek word (hapse) is
distinguished from the third (thiges), in that the former means close contact and retention:
the latter, momentary contact
(compare 1Co_7:1; Joh_20:17, Greek,
“Hold me not”; cling not to me”). Translate, “Handle not, neither
taste, nor even touch.” The
three refer to meats. “Handle not” (a
stronger term than “nor even touch”), “nor taste” with the tongue, “nor
even touch,” however slight the contact.

2:22
which all are to perish with the using;)] Lit., which are all for corruption in
the consumption. I.e., the things which are thus forbidden as soul-tainting
are things merely material, not moral, and this is evidenced by their merely
material destiny—physical dissolution in the course of natural
use. Cp. Mat_15:17.—This clause should be bracketed apart, as in R.V.
Observe St Paul’s instructive
opposite use, in an opposite connexion, of the same consideration, 1Co_6:13. There an assertor of a
distorted “liberty” is met by the thought that alike “meats”
and “belly” are to cease to exist with the present order of things; then why
for their sake violate real claims of purity?
after the commandments, &c.] The thought returns to the prohibitive formulas; these are
not utterances of God’s will, but “according to,”
of the kind of, on the scale of, merely human rule and principle. Obviously, so
far as any of them were Mosaic, St Paul would fully recognize their Divine
authority in
their own period and for their own purpose. But the period was over, the purpose was
fulfilled in Christ. To impose them now was to put God’s
edict to man’s arbitrary use.
“Of men:”—cp.
Mat_15:9; Mar_7:7; and see Isa_29:13, the passage quoted by our
Lord, and doubtless here in St Paul’s mind. The LXX. there agrees
almost verbatim with the words here, more so than with the quotations in the
Gospels.

literally, “are constituted (by their very nature) for perishing (or ‘destruction by corruption’) in

a shew]
Greek, logos; “word, speech,”

of wisdom]
It was a characteristic of Jewish thought at the time to attempt to throw a
glamour of philosophic fitness over Pharisaic doctrine and practice. See Introd.,
p. 32.
will worship] The Greek compound noun denotes a self-chosen, self-imposed, service
(in the religious sense); a round of supererogatory observance; a parody
on the genuine reverence and obedience of the Gospel.—The
element in the compound represented by “worship”
is the noun used Jas_1:27
(and see 26), and rendered “religion”
in our Versions.
humility]
See above, on Col_2:18.
The special direction of this false humility here would be, perhaps, that of
abject submission to Pharisaic “directors,” mistaken for a true
surrender to the will of God.—“Who can submit our will to the will of God, save
the Spirit of God?” (Quesnel).
neglecting of the body] Lit., unsparing (treatment) of the body; a severe and active
physical asceticism.—Something of Oriental dualism may well have influenced this
ascetic practice. Scarcely anywhere outside Scripture itself is the true honour
of the body recognized in religious systems; the tendency to regard it as
merely the burthen, or prison, of the soul appears almost everywhere. And this
is a fruitful source of the asceticism which rather attacks than disciplines
the body.—Cp. Wis_9:15: “The
corruptible body presseth down the soul.” The Pharisee Josephus (contra Apion., 2.24) says that “the soul, by its union with the body, is subject to miseries.” The
Alexandrian Philo, a coeval, like Josephus, of the Apostles (as perhaps the author
of Wisdom also was) calls the body, “a loathsome prison.” Twelve centuries
later Francis of Assisi called his body, “my brother, the ass.” See Dr F. W.
Farrar’s note on Wisdom 9, in the Speaker’s Commentary.—Contrast
1Co_6:13; 1Th_5:23, etc.
not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh] Better, as R.V., not of
any value against the indulgence of the flesh. This explanation, fully
sustained by the Greek grammar, was long ago advocated by Mr Conybeare (C. and
Howson, Life etc. of St Paul, ch. 25, in a note to the translation of
the Epistle), and had been suggested still earlier (as he says) by Abp Sumner.
It satisfies the context as no other does, supplying just such a counterpart as
might be expected (from the use of the word “indeed,”
μὲν) to the admission that the system had “a
shew of wisdom.” See Lightfoot’s note for full proof that the Greek preposition
(πρὸς) is rightly rendered (perhaps we may better say explained) “against” in such a context.
Other interpretations are as
follows; (a) “to satisfy the (reasonable) wants
of the body.” But this gives a good meaning to the Greek word rendered by A.V.
“satisfy,” whereas it has by usage a meaning of excess and indulgence.—In this
explanation, the words “not in any honour” are taken as a clause apart,
parallel with the words just previous; “not (holding the body) in any honour.”—(b) An explanation which supposes
St Paul to put the case from his opponent’s
view-point: “it
being no worthy thing to regard the satisfaction of the flesh.”
This is the hesitating exposition of Theodore of Mopsuestia (cent. 4–5).—(c) An explanation which, like (a),
breaks the last clause into two: “not of any (real) value, (but) tending
only to gratify the flesh,” i.e., to inflate the pride of unregenerate man.
So, on the whole, many modern expositors. But the sentence is thus unnaturally
dislocated, and a meaning given to the word “flesh” improbable in this context.
As explained above, the words
are a pregnant warning against the delusive but specious hope that the human
spirit is to be transfigured into moral harmony with the Divine purity through
inflictions on the body. The sublime true secret of that transfiguration is
given us in e.g. Rom_8:13;
“If ye by the Spirit mortify the practices of the body, etc.” And see below on ch. Col_3:4-5.
(Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) Colossians 2:23
have — Greek, “are having”; implying the permanent characteristic which these ordinances are
supposed to have.
show
of wisdom —
rather, “a reputation of wisdom” [Alford].
will-worship — arbitrarily invented worship: would-be worship, devised by man’s own will, not
God’s. So jealous is God of human will-worship, that He struck Nadab and
Abihu dead for burning strange incense (Lev_10:1-3). So Uzziah was stricken with leprosy for usurping
the office of priest (2Ch_26:16-21).
Compare the will-worship of Saul (1Sa_13:8-14)
for which he was doomed to lose his throne. This “voluntary worship” is
the counterpart to their “voluntary humility” (Col_2:18): both specious in appearance, the former seeming
in religion to do even more than God
requires (as in the dogmas of the Roman and Greek churches); but really setting
aside God’s will for man’s own; the latter seemingly self-abasing, but really
proud of man’s self-willed “humility” (Greek, “lowliness of mind”), while virtually
rejecting the dignity of direct communion with Christ, the Head; by worshipping
of angels.
neglecting
of the body — Greek, “not sparing of the body.” This asceticism
seems to have rested on the Oriental theory that matter is the source of evil.
This also looked plausible (compare 1Co_9:27).
not
in any honour — of
the body. As “neglecting of the body” describes asceticism positively; so this clause, negatively. Not paying any of that “honor”
which is due to the body as redeemed by such a price as the blood of Christ. We
should not degrade, but have a just estimation of ourselves, not in ourselves,
but in Christ (Act_13:46; 1Co_3:21;
1Co_6:15; 1Co_7:23;
1Co_12:23, 1Co_12:24; 1Th_4:4).
True self-denial regards the spirit, and not the forms of ascetical
self-mortification in “meats which profit not those occupied
therein” (Heb_13:9), and is consistent with Christian
self-respect, the “honor” which belongs to the believer as dedicated to the Lord. Compare
“vainly,” Col_2:18.
to
the satisfying of the flesh —
This expresses the real tendency of their human
ordinances of bodily asceticism, voluntary humility, and will-worship of
angels. While seeming to deny self
and the body, they really are pampering
the flesh. Thus “satisfying of the flesh” answers to “puffed up by his fleshly mind” (Col_2:18), so that “flesh” is used in its
ethical sense, “the carnal nature” as opposed to the “spiritual”; not in the
sense, “body.” The Greek for “satisfying”
implies satiating
to repletion, or to excess. “A surfeit of the carnal
sense is human tradition” [Hilary the Deacon, in Bengel]. Tradition puffs up;
it clogs the heavenly perceptions. They put away true “honor” that they may “satiate to the full THE FLESH.” Self-imposed ordinances
gratify the flesh (namely, self-righteousness), though seeming to mortify it.

would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at
Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;

Conclusion: Believers who understand the perfections
of Christ and have
a well settled judgment of the great truths of the Gospel, will be
preserved from all the ensnaring insinuations of those who
would corrupt the Gospel principles. All true Christians have a salvation complete in
Him and need not pin their faith on the opinions of philosophers nor bear the
yoke of ceremonial law. Christ alone is the hope of glory and in Him we are
complete.

Christ is
the wisdom of God, and is of God
made wisdom to the humble. The treasures of wisdom are not hidden from us in Christ,
but for us. Supposed supplies of
spiritual wisdom from any other source are a delusion. The fullness of the
Godhead dwells in Christ, not figuratively, but literally, for He is both God
and man, the manifestation of the Father to us.

Act 2:22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man
approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by
him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Act 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and
foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and
slain:
Act 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death:
because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
Act 2:25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always
before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
Act 2:26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover
also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Act 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou
suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Act 2:28 Thou hast made known to me the ways
of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
Act 2:29 Men and
brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both
dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Act 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with
an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he
would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that
his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Act 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are
witnesses.
Act 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having
received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this,
which ye now see and hear.
Act 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith
himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Act 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God
hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their
heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we
do?
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive
the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all
that are afar off, even
as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Act 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying,
Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
Act 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the
same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
Act 16:26 And suddenly there was a great
earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately
all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
Act 16:27 And the keeper of the prison awaking
out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and
would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
Act 16:28 But Paul cried with a loud voice,
saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
Act 16:29 Then he called for a light, and
sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,

Sirs, what

Act 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt
be saved, and thy house. (BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW IN WHAT YOU ARE BELIEVING OR
IT WILL BE IN VAIN.)

you the gospel which I preached unto
you, which
also ye have received, and wherein ye

THE TRUTH
Eph 1:13 In
whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye
believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
THE PROMISE IS THROUGH
PAULS MINISTRY.
Rom 10:13 For whosoever
shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Rom 10:14 How then shall
they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they
believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear
without a preacher?
Rom 10:15 And how shall
they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the
feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good
things!
Rom 10:16 But they have
not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our
report?
Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing
by the word of God.
Rom 10:18 But I say, Have
they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their
words unto the ends of the world.
Rom 10:19 But I say, Did not
Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I
will anger you.
Rom 10:20 But Esaias is very
bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest
unto them that asked not after me.
Rom 10:21 But to Israel
he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and
gainsaying people.

the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then
were all dead:
2Co 5:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not
henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose
again.
2Co 5:16 Wherefore
henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ
after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
2Co 5:17 Therefore if any
man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath
reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of
reconciliation;
2Co 5:19 To wit, that God
was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their
trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of
reconciliation.
2Co 5:20 Now then we are
ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye
reconciled to God.
2Co 5:21 For he hath made
him to be sin for us, who knew no
sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Heb 2:8 Thou
hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in
subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet
all things put under him.
Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus,
who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned
with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every
man.
Heb 2:10 For it became him,
for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing
many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through
sufferings.
Heb 2:11 For both he that
sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not
ashamed to call them brethren,
Heb 2:12 Saying, I will
declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing
praise unto thee.
Heb 2:13 And again, I will
put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given
me.
Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as
the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took
part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of
death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15 And deliver them
who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Heb 2:16 For verily he took
not on him the
nature of angels;
but he took on him the seed of
Abraham.
Heb 2:17 Wherefore in all
things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and
faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
Heb 2:18 For in that he
himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are
tempted.
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens
and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto
fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be
not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a
thousand years as one day.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not
slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering
to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to
repentance.
2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in
the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements
shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein
shall be burned up.
For God So Loved the
World
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave
his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but
have everlasting life.
Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son
into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be
saved.
Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him
is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he
hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Joh 3:19 And this is the
condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather
than light, because their deeds were evil.
Joh 3:20 For every one that doeth
evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be
reproved.
Joh 3:21 But he that doeth truth(FOLLOWS PAUL’S GRACE GOSPEL) cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that
they are wrought in God.
Life in the Spirit
Rom 8:1 There
is therefore now no condemnation to them which
are in Christ Jesus,(period,
NOTHING ELSE IS REQUIRED.)

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy
Spirit of promise,
Eph 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of
the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
1Co 15:1
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto
you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1Co 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have
believed in vain.
1Co 15:3 For I delivered
unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our
sins according to the scriptures;
1Co 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day
according to the scriptures:

1Ti 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto
the knowledge of the truth.
1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one
mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a
ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
1Ti 2:7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the
truth in Christ, and
lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: THE JEWS DO NOT
BELIEVE IN THE TRIUN GOD HEAD. BUT WE IN CHRIST JESUS DO BELIEVE! GOD THE FATHER, THE SON, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT!
BEFORE ABRAHAM WAS
“I AM”
The Word Became Flesh

the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him
was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not.
Joh 1:6 There was a man sent from God, whose
name was John.
Joh 1:7 The same came for
a witness, to bear witness of the Light,
that all men through him might
believe.
Joh 1:8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
Joh 1:9 That was the true Light, which
lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
Joh 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew
him not.
Joh 1:11 He came unto his own,(THE JEW’S) and his own(THE JEW’S) received him not.
Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons
of God,(THE 12 and the few that received the HOLY SPIRIT
ON THE PENTECOST HAD COM AND WERE BAPTIZED IN HIM) even to them that believe on
his name:
Joh 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of
the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us(THE JEW’S), (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the
Father,) full of grace and truth.
